WALES WEST LIGHT RAILWAY Baldwin & Mobile County Approved EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS Mission Statement: Our mission at the Wales West Light Railway is to educate the children in the area's public and private schools about the many aspects of railroading. Through our affordable program we will instill in the children a sense of appreciation for railroading's contribution to their past and an awareness of the importance of railroading in their lives today. We will also show the children some of the technology that make railroads possible. We will work to help children gain respect for railroading because of its positive impact on the environment as a form of mass transportation. We will stress the importance of railroad safety as it relates to the public. This is to be accomplished in an environment that encourages both fun and joy during a classroom lesson, train ride behind a real steam locomotive, and hands-on walking tour of the railway. Description Of Services: Our railway at Wales West is an approved field trip for Baldwin and Mobile County schools. This enriching field trip teaches lessons in Social Studies, Science and Language Arts for grades pre-K through 6th grade. We are an authentic steam powered Welsh narrow gauge railway complete with a reproduction Victorian era train station, locomotive, and rolling stock. Students will learn about the history of the railroads, the science of steam engines, transportation, and railway safety. We use hands-on activities and visual teaching materials to create a meaningful and fun learning experience. Students will also throw a switch, visit a grade crossing, experiment with flanged wheels on rails, and visit the locomotive to see the fire, cab controls and blow the whistle. We encourage you to stay and have lunch or snacks in our playground ( or indoors if raining ) to further enhance your trip. There are also lunch and snack food items available in the train station tea room. Sessions include approximately two hours of instruction and thirty minutes of restroom break and free time. Field trips are offered Monday through Friday during the months of August, September, January, February, March, and May. Prices start at $7.00 per student. Please contact us to learn about the many options available. |
